nanocrystal (rus. нанокристалл) — a crystal whose size in one or more dimensions is of the nanoscale.

Description

Substances in the nanocrystal state may obtain new properties that are extrinsic to such substances in a macroscopic state due to the effects of particle size (e.g., see "quantum dot"), changes in relative share of surface energy in total system energy, etc. Substances with the same composition may form nanocrystals with different morphology (see fig.).
